Between 1998 and 2004 there were 40,000 cases of rape that had been reported in the DRC, most of which were in South Kivu. This was only the amount that were reported, it is suspected that are 400,000 rape victims in the DRC today. In 2008 there were 15,996 cases of sexual violence where 65% of the victims were children. Men are also raped, 22% of men compared to 30% of women report being victims of sexual violence. Many men are afraid to report it because the might be ostracized or the could be arrested because it might be seen as homosexual, which is a crime in 38 African countries.
